      Haiti Visa Policy

Haiti has a visa-free policy for most citizens coming to stay in the country for three months or less, but those who may wish to stay for much longer must get a visa. The country has a visa on arrival for tourists who must pay an application fee at the point of entry. Visitors are required to hold a valid passport for at least six months from the date they enter the country.

      Pre Arranged Visa

Despite having a visa-free policy for persons coming to stay for three months or less, this gesture is not open to all nationalities. According to current regulations, citizens of some countries coming for such short-term visits must apply for a visa at any of their foreign mission. These countries are Vietnam, Cuba, Colombia, Libya, Panama, Syria, Dominican Republic, Yemen, Iran, and Vietnam. Visitors from these countries must submit their application to the embassy for approval; it is only after approval that they can enter Haiti.

It is important to note that this list is by no means absolute, as foreign policies change from time to time. This list is influenced by ever-changing policies, so some countries may be added or removed from the list. If you have plans to visit Haiti anytime soon, consult this pre-arranged visa list to check if your country is listed and act accordingly.

      Selected Passports

Citizens of the United States, Canada, and Schengen States with valid passports can also enter Haiti visa-free for 3 months. Foreigners of Haitian origin with proof may also enter without visas.

How To Apply For A Haitian Visa?

If you intend to spend more than 3 months in Haiti, you definitely need to apply for a visa regardless of your nationality. Here are the ways to do so.

      Visa On Arrival

This is one option open to a few nationalities. Once they arrive in Haiti, they will be issued a visa valid for a short time. Visitors will be given an application form to fill which will be approved, and a visa will be issued. Applicants must pay an application fee for processing.

      Embassy

The other option is to apply to a Haitian embassy abroad for long-term visits. This process takes some more time and several documents. Only those who meet the requirements will get the visa.

Travel And Safety Information About Haiti

      Safety Concerns

Haiti is a very unstable country rife with violence and instability exacerbated by the last earthquake. However, the country has evolved, and the situation is improving by the day. As a visitor, you must be mindful of the areas you visit at all times. Be security conscious, and don't wear expensive jewelry in public. Keep valuables like phones and wallets in your pocket, and always be aware of your surroundings. Also, avoid isolated or crowded places at night.

      Interaction With Locals

Haitians are warm towards foreigners, so don't be surprised to be called the affectionate term "Cheri" by the locals. You should also learn a word or two of greetings like Bonjour. If you wish to take a picture of a local, ask for their permission first. Haitians are conscious of their appearance and feel that they should always look their best in every shot. They don't appreciate shots in their work clothes, so avoid irritating them with indiscriminate shots. Seek their permission first after establishing a rapport with the.

      Visa Extension

You can apply for an extension of your visa by visiting the nearest immigration office or the Ministry of the Interior in Port au Prince. This must be done before your current visa expires, as already expired visas cannot be extended. The officer on duty will receive your application and enquire as to why you wish to extend your stay. After the brief interview, the officer will issue the extension after considering several factors.

      Foreign Currency

The US dollars is the popular foreign currency in Haiti and can easily be exchanged for the local currency, but the Euros are not far behind. If you must hold cash, it is best to hold the US dollars but keep excess funds in your credit or debit card.

      Passport

Only passports with a minimum of six months validity will be accepted; anything below that will lead to application denial. Also, note that your visa's validity is also linked to passport validity. Your visa will expire once your passport expires, even if it has a few months left.

      Return Ticket

Always book your return ticket before your arrival. This is advisable because it is a requirement for short-term visitors and it is also the cheaper option. You may end up paying a steep price for a ticket for a few days or on the day you plan to travel.
