Uganda E Tourist Visa

The e-tourist visa is a single-entry visa specially created for tourists. It allows the holder to visit for holidays, sightseeing or even to spend time with friends and family who may be Ugandan citizens or permanent residents. This visa is strictly for tourism and other non-economic social engagements, so you are not allowed to seek employment in Uganda with it. It is available online and applicants don’t have to visit the Ugandan embassy or consulate in their country to apply for one. To apply, one simply needs to fill out the online application form on VisaHQ and attach their passport, a recent photograph, yellow fever vaccination certificate and a host of other documents.

Once it is approved the electronic visa will be mailed to their email and they must print out the e-visa confirmation and travel with it to Uganda as evidence.

Port of Entry

  • Entebbe International Airport

Uganda Business e Visa

The business e-visa is another online business issued to businesspersons such as investors, professionals, or consultants coming to Uganda for non-commercial engagements.

This visa is not the same as a work visa but is only issued to persons who come solely for short-term business engagements like meetings, Seminars, consulting, contract negotiations/signing, estate settlement, etc. To apply for this visa, you must include an invitation letter issued by the host to your application, clearly stating your mission. You must also provide evidence of your economic situation (self employed, employee) with sufficient documents to back up your claims.

Based on Uganda's visa policy, holders of business e-visas must not earn direct remuneration for their services in any form because it is not a work visa.

Port Of Entry

  • Entebbe International Airport

Transit e Visa

A transit e-visa is a special visa issued to persons traveling to other countries through Uganda. This visa is like the tourist visa, but the difference is that it has a shorter validity and is only meant for travelers passing through Uganda. Citizens from up to 198 countries who plan to switch flights at Entebbe International Airport enroute to another country may apply for this visa. Transit visas are only required for travelers who intend to exit the embassy before their next flight is ready; those who intend to wait in the airport's transit area don't need this visa.

Port Of Entry

This visa can only be accepted at the Entebbe International Airport

East Africa e Visa

The East Africa e visa is a multinational visa recognized and issued by three countries in the East African sub-region: Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya. This visa allows the holder to enter any of these countries as a business visitor or a tourist. All three countries accept the East Africa e visa, but the rules state that the visitor must enter the country that issued the visa first before making their way to the other two. This visa is issued as a multiple entry visa rather than a single-entry visa and it is obtainable online.

Some foreign nationals may also obtain the visas on arrival at any of the airports in Uganda, Kenya, or Rwanda (this option is not open to all applicants).

Applying for a visa at the airport can take quite some time due to long queues so it is advisable to apply online and have your application approved before boarding a flight to Uganda.

Port of Entry

The visa is accepted at the following entry points in all three countries:

  • Entebbe International Airport (Uganda)
  • Kigali International Airport (Rwanda)
  • Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (Kenya)
  • Moi International Airport (Kenya)
  • Eldoret International Airport (Kenya)
  • International border crossings in all three countries

Visa Policy of Uganda

Uganda's visa policy is regulated by Chapter 66 of the Citizenship and Immigration Control Act, Part VI Immigration Control. This law guides the citizenship and immigration regulations of the country. Chapter 66 regulates the entry and residency of foreign nationals in Uganda who visit the country briefly or to settle temporarily or permanently. The law establishes the identity and rights of Ugandan citizens and residents who are allowed to freely enter and exit the country.

Furthermore, the law states that while residents enjoy the same entry and exit rights as citizens do, others who are not from visa free countries must apply for an entry permit (which is called an entry visa for tourists). A tourist visa is the only legal document which allows a foreign national to enter Uganda as a tourist.

For countries with established reciprocity agreements with Uganda, their citizens can enjoy visa free entry but can only stay for a limited time (for not more than 30-90 days in most cases).

Chapter 66 also clearly spells out what is allowed and prohibited for tourists in the country. For instance, the law prohibits tourists from working or schooling in Uganda on a tourist visa. It also empowers the immigration officers at the airport and border crossings to inspect visitors and to turn back persons who do not have valid travel documents or have suspicious reasons for visiting. Visitors who have been issued visas but cannot justify their intentions or are found to have obtained the visa under a false pretext can be denied entry in line with Uganda's visa laws.

The law also empowers the immigration authorities to sanction tourists who flout the law during their time in the country. With predetermined sanctions clearly listed for erring visitors.

Uganda Visa-Free Countries

Not all visitors require visas to enter Uganda unless they wish to stay for more than the approved 90 days. If you are from a visa free country, you don’t need a visa for a short-term visit to the country.

Key Information About Uganda e Visa

Application Fees: The application fee for the e visa is the same for applicants regardless of their nationality. The fee must also be paid before you can submit your application form. Fees are paid online using a credit or debit card and they are not refundable in the event that the visa is not issued. Furthermore, paying the fee is not a guarantee that the visa will be issued to you if you don't meet the requirements.

Primary Destination Rule: If you are applying for the East African visa which grants access to Uganda, Rwanda or Kenya you must make sure that you visit the country that issued the visa first. If you apply for the Ugandan version of the visa, you must visit Uganda first before traveling to the other countries.

Duration Of Stay: The longest period you can stay in Uganda on an e visa is 90 days. If you decide to apply for an East African visa instead, you will have to spread the duration across all three countries if you plan to visit all of them. Don't make the mistake of counting the 90 days separately for each country.

Apply Outside Uganda: You can only apply for the visa outside Uganda not when you are inside the country.

Not for Work: The Ugandan e visa or East African visa is not for work. The business version is not for commercial activities either. If you decide to work in Uganda you must apply for a work visa by submitting an application to the Ugandan foreign mission nearest to you. This visa is strictly for leisure, transit and non commercial business engagements.
